Pillars of Society
Mr Norman Beasley slams his fist on the bar!
A pint of your best sir and that big cigar
He sniffs at the views on the TV news
He has to puff outside
Gonna write me a letter
Make me feel better
About what I can't abide
What has become of my country?
Your sincerely, Mr Beasley
Pillar of Society!
Henrietta Hooley picks up the Daily Mail
I believe in this chap
Put them all in jail!
She snorts at the shows on the radio
Those opinionated types
Who pick up the phone to have a good moan
About the British Way Of Life !!!
And what has become of my country?
Yours so truly, Mrs Hooley
Pillar of Society!
Oh! The pillars of society
Village greens and pots of tea
Tally Ho! There they go!
Fox hunting you and me
Oh! The Pillar of Society
Village fetes and old school ties
Chocks away!
They're here to stay
My! Oh my!
She said she used to be hippy
In the 1960's when he railed about Vietnam
But that's a long way back and the pork gets fat
And now they don't give a damn!
Except for voting for a little man dressed in tweed
Who keeps banging on about how things ain't what they used to be!
Like the culture
The freedom and TV
Yours so truly, Mrs Hooley
Pillar of Society !
Yours sincerely, Mr Beasley
You know they just might!

When most of this was recorded I was a kid in the new wave era, discovering The Beatles and then Mod. All I Gotta Do especially, with its Beatles influence, reminds me of that time. OldMod67

This L.P. came out the year I left school and I bought this as a 16 year old Mod kid. A real pleasure and an album I've not stopped listening to ever since. This copy was a gift for my son, who'd borrowed mine and had to have a copy for himself. Great lyrics and perfect melodies, which have always put Squire above many other bands as far as I'm concerned. OldMod67
